Atletico Madrid Run Riot Against Barcelona in Copa del Rey Semi-Final First Leg
Atletico Madrid delivered a sensational first-half attacking display as they thrashed Barcelona, leaders of La Liga, in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final.
It was a miserable evening for the visitors, who were also denied a consolation goal in the second half after a record-equalling eight-minute VAR review ruled Pau Cubarsi offside.
This marked the second consecutive year the two sides had met at this stage of the competition. Barcelona triumphed last season en route to lifting the trophy for a record 32nd time. However, this time Diego Simeone’s men gained emphatic revenge with a stunning four-goal first-half performance.
First-Half Blitz Stuns Barcelona
Atleti’s opener set the tone for what would become a disastrous night for the Catalans. A misplaced backpass from Eric Garcia to Joan Garcia slipped under the goalkeeper’s foot and rolled into the net for an own goal.
The hosts doubled their advantage in the 14th minute through the competition’s top scorer this season, Antoine Griezmann, who curled a superb finish past his former club.
From that point, Atletico dominated proceedings and looked dangerous with every forward move.
Barcelona’s Fermin Lopez struck the woodwork in what proved to be one of the visitors’ rare first-half opportunities. Meanwhile, Atleti continued to press and were rewarded again in the 33rd minute.
Giuliano Simeone surged down the right flank before finding Julian Alvarez, who cleverly clipped the ball across to Ademola Lookman. The Nigerian forward calmly finished for his second goal in as many games for his new club.
Alvarez then ended his two-month, 11-match goal drought in emphatic fashion, unleashing a thunderous long-range strike into the net during first-half added time to make it 4-0.
VAR Drama and Red Card Compound Misery
Barcelona believed they had pulled one back in the second half when Cubarsi turned home from close range following a pass from Robert Lewandowski. However, VAR intervened, and after an unusually lengthy eight-minute review, the goal was disallowed for offside.
The duration of the check matched the record set during AFC Bournemouth’s FA Cup fifth-round win over Wolverhampton Wanderers last season.
Barcelona’s night worsened further when Eric Garcia was sent off with five minutes remaining following another VAR review. The defender was dismissed after fouling Alex Baena as the substitute broke through on goal.
All to Play for in the Return Leg
The heavy defeat leaves Barcelona facing a monumental task when they host the 10-time Copa del Rey winners in the return leg on 3 March.
With a four-goal deficit and defensive concerns to address, Barcelona must produce a near-perfect performance to overturn the tie. Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid stand firmly in control after one of their most dominant displays of the season.
